Not the Usual Tour: Inside the Real Dragon Caves

I’ve been guiding visitors around Mallorca for years, and there’s something about the island’s underground world that always pulls me back. The Coves del Drac, or Dragon Caves, are often mentioned in brochures and guidebooks and yes, they’re famous, busy, and sometimes feel like a theme park.

But here’s the thing: if you know how to approach them, they can become something entirely different.

A place of silence... if you find the right tim

Most people rush through the caves, packed into timed groups, smartphone in hand, whispering “wow” as they follow the tour route. But I’ve learned there are moments, early, off-season, or even on certain quiet afternoons when the caves breathe differently. The air cools, the tour pace slows, and you can listen.

Not just to the music on the underground lake (which, by the way, is more than just a gimmick if you let it hit you with your eyes closed), but to the heartbeat of a living geology, formed drop by drop, in darkness, for thousands of years.

My favourite story to tell inside the caves...

There’s a spot I always slow down near, a kind of natural cathedral, high ceilings, the scent of minerals and stillness in the air. That’s where I like to talk about the explorer Édouard-Alfred Martel, the French geologist who mapped the caves in 1896.

He went in with candles and courage. No concrete paths, no handrails. Just instinct. I sometimes imagine him standing where we stand, scribbling in a notebook, hearing only water echoing in stone. There’s poetry in that.

This isn’t a stop... it’s a descent into another world

If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience, maybe this isn’t it. But if you're looking for something deeper, a chance to connect with the ancient bones of the island, in silence, with a guide who knows when not to speak, then this could be the highlight of your visit.

From guidebooks to goosebumps

I don’t take groups of 40. I take curious minds, respectful travelers, and those who still believe that nature deserves reverence.

So if you're planning to visit the Coves del Drac, let me take you not as a tourist, but as a guest of the island.
