Beyond the Sunset: The Other Side of Sa Foradada

I’ve watched hundreds of sunsets in Mallorca, from rooftops, mountains, and cliffs. But the one that always stirs something deeper in me happens at Sa Foradada.
You’ve probably seen it in photos: the iconic rocky peninsula on the northwest coast, with that perfect hole punched through it like a portal. Instagram loves it, and so do tour buses. But there’s a version of Sa Foradada you don’t know, one I only share with guests who want to go beyond the postcard.

The path less taken
Most visitors arrive just before sunset, elbowing for the best view from Son Marroig. That’s fine, it’s beautiful, yes. But I prefer starting earlier, taking the trail that winds down from the estate through olive groves older than the United States, with the sea glinting between the branches.
It’s not an easy walk. But halfway down, the world quiets. You hear only cicadas, the crunch of stone underfoot, and the scent of wild rosemary.

A Mallorcan picnic, far from the crowds
This is where we stop. I set down a basket filled with local cheese, sobrasada, panades and maybe a bottle of chilled malvasÃa from Banyalbufar. Then I tell stories, not the ones from the guidebooks, but the kind my grandfather used to share. Tales of smugglers, pirates, and lovers who met by moonlight beneath the arch of the rock.
When the sun begins to dip, we find our place. Not the Instagram lookout, but a rocky perch just for us. No filters needed.

Why this moment matters
I’ve guided actors, CEOs, families, and newlyweds. And this spot always moves them. Because it’s not really about Sa Foradada. It’s about feeling Mallorca, not as a destination, but as something alive and ancient. Something that, if you let it, can reach you deep inside.
There’s magic in watching the sun fall behind the sea. Not with hundreds of others, but in silence, with a guide who knows when to tell a story, and when to let the wind speak.
